这几天忙儿子留学的事，昨晚给勇教授一封邮件，大致写了下我的初步计划，还问了几个问题。很快收到回复，说计划不错，等选好了学校给他看看，等写好自荐材料和申请材料也给他看看，具体的建设性意见一个字也没有。

可能是想让我自力更生吧，在美国人看来这绝对是为人着想，而我们中国人认为帮忙帮到细致才算朋友。

和琦聊起留学学费的事，他曾听Brad说过大学期间基本没向家里要过钱，以此认为美国大学学费没有中学高。我有点怀疑又有点期待，怀疑的是BRAD以什么支付他的学费，当然是打工挣的，可是中国学生允许打工吗？期待的是即使不能打工，只要学费低我便可改变预算，使中学的选择范围更大些。

琦说干脆写个邮件问问吧，同时抄送一份给我。邮件如下：

Hi Brad,
Jenny has some questions about the school in US, I think you are the best person to answer them :)
1. How about the tuition for college in US? I mean how much for average, and how much in your school.
2. Can foreign student do part time job in college? Is that legal?

今早收到Brad的回复，极其认真洋洋洒洒一大篇，看了俺好感动哦。随即向琦夸Brad真是位好同志，琦也说Brad确实是个很靠谱的孩子。以后除了勇教授，Brad就是咱儿子的第二咨询师了。

Brad的回复如下：

1. College is insanely expensive... here is the link for my school's current tuition:

   As a quick summary, each year students can enroll in 2 full semesters plus 2 summer semesters. This totals at $52,426 just for tuition!! Ahhh so expensive. Don't forget somewhere around $2000/year or more for housing and food.
    But my school is one of the more expensive ones and the cost is offset by co-op (my internship program) because most years a NEU student will spent 6 months on co-op and so you'll only pay half of that tuition and housing will change if they leave Boston. With all this said, you can still apply for scholarships. Depending on how good the student's grades are, you could have a large chunk removed from your tuition (in some rare cases they'll pay for your food and housing as well).
    This is definitely on the high end of the spectrum. State schools, for example the one in this state, the University of Massachusetts (UMass, which has a couple campuses now, including one in Boston), are far cheaper and often offer equally good education. The real discount comes if you are a resident of that state, in which case the tuition can be cut by 2/3. The downside is that a lot of them can be quite large and some students have to work harder to with larger classroom sizes, etc. Sometimes it could be the difference between a classroom with 200 students versus one with 25. This doesn't mean the school is bad, just some people prefer a smaller school.

2. About working... I am definitely no expert on US visas, as I have never gotten one and as I understand, the system is extremely complex. But I would guess that if he came to study here, his visa would only permit him to study. Every employer here I've met is extremely strict about employment- they have to be, because they must file taxes for every employee and if that employee is an illegal worker, they will get in big trouble. The US is very sensitive about illegal workers in this regard.
     With that said, many universities have work-study programs where students are allotted a certain amount of money that they can make during the year (there is a limit at my school) and they can get a job on campus in order to earn that money. This is offered at my school and I don't think you need a work visa for this, because I have seen many international students working these positions.
     Also I can't imagine that he will really have time to hold down a part time job and go to school full time, in a foreign country. I found it really stressful to live abroad at first because everything was so new. I found that things that I can do quickly here took me much longer because I wasn't familiar with the country. He might not have much free time. Just a thought.
